Richard Saucedo | Hal Leonard Richard Saucedo Richard L. Saucedo retired in 2013 as Director of Bands and Performing Arts Department Chairman at Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana. During his 31-year tenure, Carmel bands received numerous state, regional and national honors in the areas of concert band, jazz and marching band. Under his direction, Carmel's Wind Symphony I performed at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival three times, and was named Indiana State Champion Concert Band most recently in 2013. The group also performed at the 2005 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Carmel Jazz Ensembles won numerous awards at festivals in Indiana and throughout the Midwest, and the Carmel High School Marching Greyhounds finished in the top ten at the Bands of America Grand National Championship for 17 years under Saucedo and were named National Champions in 2005 and 2012. The Marching Band was the Indiana Class A State Champion four times. He was named Indiana Bandmasters' 1998-99 Bandmaster of the Year, and Indiana Music Educators Association's 2010 Outstanding Music Educator.  His accomplishments have been highlighted in articles by HALFTIME and SCHOOL BAND AND ORCHESTRA magazines. He was inducted into the Music for All Hall of Fame in 2015. Mr. Saucedo is a freelance arranger and composer, having released numerous marching band arrangements, choral arrangements, and concert band and orchestral works. He is on the writing staff of Hal Leonard LLC. His compositions have been performed by middle school and high school bands all over the world, as well as by college and university groups. Nocturne, his first work for orchestra, was named most outstanding new composition at the 2009 National Orchestra Cup Festival at Lincoln Center. His most recent orchestra work, Essay #1, was premiered at the 2014 Midwest Clinic. Mr. Saucedo receives numerous commission requests, and will be releasing new works for university, high school and middle school bands throughout 2018-19. He is the author of two DVDs on rehearsing the marching band wind section, and is featured in two DVDs on concert band rehearsal techniques, all available at dynamicmarching.com. Mr. Saucedo travels around the world as an adjudicator, keynote speaker, clinician and guest conductor. He will appear in over 25 states during the 2018-19 school year. In July 2014, he was an adjudicator/clinician for the Singapore International Band Festival, and served as clinician and guest conductor at the Japan Band Clinic in May 2016. In September 2016, he presented at the Australian Band and Orchestra Clinic in Sydney. He was a featured clinician at the 2017 Midwest Clinic and the 2018 Texas Music Educators Association convention. He currently judges for Drum Corps International, and was the brass composer/arranger for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps (Rosemont, IL) from 2000-2008. The Cavaliers won five DCI World Championships during his tenure. He also spent four years as the brass composer/arranger for the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps (La Crosse, WI). He is an educational consultant for Music for All and Bands of America. He is a member of the Conn-Selmer Division of Education, and currently serves as assistant chief judge for Bands of America marching band competitions. He is a former member of the Board of Directors for United Sound, an organization whose mission is to give special needs students a chance to experience the joy of instrumental music performance through peer mentoring. Mr. Saucedo did his undergraduate work at Indiana University in Bloomington, and finished his master's degree at Butler University in Indianapolis. He is an aviation enthusiast and a certified private pilot. He is married to Sarah and is most proud of his two children - his daughter Carmen studied elementary education at Ball State and is now a teacher; his son Ethan is in 5th grade and plays basketball and studies piano and percussion. Mike Tomaro | Hal Leonard Mike Tomaro Mike Tomaro is the Director of Jazz Studies at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. This saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, composer, arranger and educator earned his B.S. degree in Music Education from Duquesne University and his M.A. degree in Saxophone Performance from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Mike is a Yamaha Performing Artist and former member of the Army Blues jazz ensemble. While a member of this group, he served as its Enlisted Musical Director and performed for Presidents Reagan, Bush and Clinton, as well as heads of state from around the world. He also composed and/or arranged much of the Army Blues repertoire, and was featured as a soloist on several of the group's albums and CDs. Mike has four nationally released recordings under his own name that showcase his talents as both performer and writer: Nightowl Suite, Forgotten Dreams, Dancing Eyes (all on Seabreeze Jazz), and Home Again (Positive Music). His latest CD, Nightowl Suite, is Mike's first release under his own name in nine years and features his compositions and arrangements as performed by the Three Rivers Jazz Orchestra, a group that he co-founded. Music that Mike has composed or arranged has been performed by the likes of jazz greats Nancy Wilson, Claudio Roditi, New York Voices, Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, Ernie Watts, Bobby Shew, Al Vizzutti and many others, as well as high school, college, university and professional bands around the world. More than 80 of his compositions and arrangements are published by Doug Beach Music, Hal Leonard Corporation and Walrus Music. As a performer, Mike has worked with such diverse artists and groups as Nancy Wilson (most recently on her Grammy award winning CD RSVP on the MCG Jazz label), Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles, Michael Feinstein, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Mathis, Terence Blanchard, Dizzy Gillespie Tribute Big Band, New York Voices and the Woody Herman Orchestra. In his hometown, he has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Pittsburgh Ballet and Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, in addition to leading his own small groups. He is a long-time associate of the International Association for Jazz Education, where he is a member of its prestigious resource team in the area of arranging and composition. He is also affiliated with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers where he has received an ASCAP Plus award for the past four years, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and the Pittsburgh Jazz Society, where he is a member of its board of directors. Hal Leonard Announces New Hires

Hal Leonard has announced the expansion of their instrumental and choral teams with the additions of Joe Snyder and Zachary Moore.

Joe Snyder has been named Instrumental Editor. He will be involved with the development and marketing of new publications.

“We are excited to welcome Joe to the Hal Leonard family as Instrumental Editor,” said Michael Sweeney, Director of Band Publications. “He brings an extensive background as a music educator, professional musician, and composer/arranger. Additionally, with his experience in the publishing industry and retail, Joe is the perfect addition to our instrumental team.”

Joe graduated in 2000 from West Chester University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Music Education. After graduation, he served as a band director and general music teacher at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for 17 years in Pennsylvania and Florida. During his teaching years, he continued graduate studies in trombone performance and composition/arranging with Dr. Matt Niess, Denis DiBlasio, and Dr. Quincy Hilliard. Also an accomplished musician, Snyder has shared a stage with artists including Pete Townshend, Alex Brightman, Donnie Kehr, Titus Burgess, KT Tunstall, Melissa Etheridge, Joey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick of NSYNC , among many others.

As a published composer, arranger, and orchestrator, Joe has written and orchestrated scholastic music as well as music for various touring shows and concerts. He has recently served as Publications Manager/Editor for Winger-Jones Publications and Instrumental Editor for J.W. Pepper & Son. 

Joe resides in Lancaster, PA, with his wife, Janel, and their blended family of five children.

Zach Moore joins the Hal Leonard team as a choral editor, responsible for reviewing and editing music for publication.

This experience and his background in music education make him the perfect addition to our team.”

Zach is a composer, conductor, and speaker. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and a master’s degree in composition from Stephen F. Austin State University, where he studied composition with Dr. Stephen Lias. Zach has received an increasing number of commissions worldwide and has served as composer in residence to the Master Singers of Eau Claire, WI. His works have been performed at TMEA, ACDA, Carnegie Hall, Taipei National Concert Hall, and many more. His first feature-length film score premiered at the Caesar Forum in Las Vegas in 2022. Zach lives in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

The year is 1980. Somewhere along the beach in Venice, California, Sonny Malone becomes frustrated with the mural he has painted of the nine muses of Greek mythology. After he storms off in frustration, the Muses come to life (I'm Alive) and Kira (a.k.a. Clio), Sonny's Muse, hatches a plan to inspire Sonny to artistic greatness. Kira disguises herself as a regular mortal from Australia and arrives at the Santa Monica pier just in time to rescue Sonny. Kira begins her work (Magic), and Sonny reveals his dream to open a roller disco. Inspiring Sonny brings Kira one step closer to being granted the gift of Xanadu. This infuriates sister Muses, Melpomene and Calliope, who hatch a plan to curse Kira so she falls in love with Sonny, a mortal, which is forbidden (Evil Woman). Sonny and Kira meet again in front of a rundown theater and receive a sign that things are coming together to fulfill Sonny's dream (Suddenly). Sonny meets with Danny, the owner of the theater, who is not interested in Sonny's plan until Kira enters and reminds him of someone he knew long ago (Whenever You're Away From Me). In a flashback, we learn that Kira once came to Danny disguised as the southern belle, Kitty, and inspired him to build the old theater. Melpomene and Calliope hide in the abandoned theater and await the arrival of Kira and Sonny so they can curse them and make them fall in love. Danny and Sonny run into each other at the theater, which is named Xanadu, and share their individual visions for its restoration (Dancin'). Danny agrees to give Sonny the theater if he can fix it up by the end of the day. Kira arrives, and they begin planning, providing Melpomene and Calliope with the moment they have been waiting for (Strange Magic). Left with only one hour to restore the theater, the Muses enter and help with the job (All Over The World). With the theater restored, Danny is back in show business, and Sonny's dreams are coming true. The two of them admire the Xanadu sign, while Kira receives a message via Hermes from Zeus reminding her of the rules she must live by. Realizing her feelings, Kira tries to leave, but Sonny begs her to stay (Don't Walk Away). Kira gets away and her evil sisters talk Danny into selling them the theater. Kira returns to Venice Beach to re-enter the mural, having failed in her quest to inspire Sonny and achieve Xanadu for herself. Confronted by her sisters and Sonny, the truth comes out, and she leaves, flying on Pegasus, back to Mount Olympus (Suspended in Time). Kira is brought before Zeus, Aprhodite, Thetis, and Hera to answer for what she has done. Zeus proclaims his sentence, but the others beg his mercy (Have You Never Been Mellow). Zeus pardons Kira, and Sonny arrives at Mount Olympus to profess his love. Zeus decrees that Kira shall return to Earth as a mortal to be with Sonny. He grants her the gift of Xanadu. Marti Lunn Lantz | Hal Leonard Marti Lunn Lantz Marti Lunn Lantz is a native of Akron, Ohio, and attended the University of Akron as a piano performance major, also acting as vocalist with the University jazz band and later singing with Fred Waring. Marti has performed as a band singer and keyboardist in the Pocono Mountains resorts for many years, as well as working as a studio session singer. Winning awards each year beginning at the age of 9 as a junior composer led to the publication of her first choral work by Shawnee Press when she was a senior in high school. Teaming with Lois Brownsey, Marti has choral works and songbooks published with Shawnee Press, Alfred, Warner Bros., and Hal Leonard, and has received ASCAP awards for many years. Collaborating with her husband, composer and teacher David Lantz III on many choral works, she is co-owner of Lantz Choral Publications, a publisher of sacred choral works. Marti is a member of PFMC and teaches piano and voice in her music studio as well as holding the position of organist at Stroudsburg United Methodist Church. Paul Lavender | Hal Leonard Paul Lavender As Vice President of Instrumental Publications for Hal Leonard Corporation, Paul Lavender directs the product development and marketing of Hal Leonard’s extensive catalog of performance publications for orchestra, concert band, marching band, and jazz ensemble, as well as instrumental books, collections and methods. Paul supervises the creative work of many of the industry’s most respected composers and arrangers, publishing over 600 new instrumental publications each year. His longtime association with renowned film composer John Williams has produced the prestigious John Williams Signature Series, featuring Williams’ authentic film scores and concert music for professional orchestras. In addition, Paul has served as music supervisor and arranger for several of Williams’ concerts and special events, including the 2003 and 2008 Marine Band Anniversary Concerts, the 2004 Rose Bowl, and the 2004 Kennedy Center Honors program (televised on CBS). Also a prolific writer, Paul has contributed more than 1,200 arrangements and compositions to the educational and concert repertoire, and he continues to be one of the most widely played writers today. Most recently, he has received international acclaim with two notable transcriptions for symphonic band: Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky and Maurice Ravel. Both works were written for and recorded by the world-renowned United States Marine Band, and performed on national tours under the direction of Colonel Michael J. Colburn. Paul is also co-author and managing editor of Essential Elements, the leading method for beginning bands and orchestras. Under his direction, Hal Leonard recently released Essential Elements Interactive, the first-ever, cloud-based resource that features online learning for school band and orchestra programs. His expertise in music notation and preparation, recording production, and computer system design contributes to Hal Leonard's continuing success as the leading print and digital music publisher, recognized throughout the world. In 2005, Paul received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Central Michigan University, where he did both his undergraduate and graduate work in Music Theory and Composition. After serving as a graduate assistant teaching music theory at CMU, he furthered his music studies at the University of Michigan. Paul and his wife Cheryl, an internationally recognized music educator and author of classroom resources, live in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Samuel R. Hazo | Hal Leonard Samuel R. Hazo Samuel R. Hazo (b. 1966) resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his wife and children. In 2003, Mr. Hazo became the first composer in history to be awarded the winner of both composition contests sponsored by the National Band Association. He has composed for the professional, university and public school levels in addition to writing original scores for television, radio and the stage. His original symphonic compositions include performances with actors Brooke Shields, James Earl Jones, David Conrad and Richard Kiley. Most recently, Mr. Hazo was asked by the Newtown School District to compose the memorial for the children and women who were lost in the tragedy at their Sandy Hook Elementary School. The result was a major work for Choir, Orchestra and Wind Band combined titled "Glorificare." It was premiered in May of 2013 by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and VOCE Singers performing side-by-side with the Newtown High School musicians. Mr. Hazo also composed "Bridges," which he was requested to write by Virginia Tech University following their tragic shootings.  In 2012, two of Mr. Hazo's compositions were performed at the London Summer Olympic Games.   On the Internet, Mr. Hazo's music has compiled over three million hits on YouTube. His compositions have been performed and recorded world-wide, including performances by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra (national tour), the Birmingham Symphonic Winds (UK) and the Klavier Wind Project’s recordings with Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Additionally, numerous titles of Mr. Hazo's works are included in the series "Teaching Music Through Performance in Band."  He has served as composer-in-residence at Craig Kirchhoff’s University of Minnesota Conducting Symposium and has also lectured on music and music education at universities and high schools internationally. In 2004, Mr. Hazo's compositions were listed in a published national survey of the "Top Twenty Compositions of All Time" for wind band.  He is a member of ASCAP and recipient of multiple ASCAPlus Awards. Samuel R. Hazo has been a music teacher at every educational grade level from kindergarten through college, including tenure as a high school and university director. He has been invited to guest conduct over 60 university ensembles and half of All-State bands in America. Mr. Hazo was twice named “Teacher of Distinction” by the southwestern Pennsylvania Teachers’ Excellence Foundation. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Duquesne University where he served on the Board of Governors and was awarded as Duquesne’s Outstanding Graduate in Music Education. Kaufman Overview / Synopsis One of Broadway's most hilarious shows, Guys and Dolls has been described as the perfect musical comedy. It is primarily based on Damon Runyon's short story "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown," which describes the unlikely romance between a pure at heart urban missionary and a slick Broadway gambler. The show's second romantic storyline involves Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide, who have been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan organizes "the oldest established, permanent floating craps game in New York," and Adelaide is the main attraction at the Hot Box nightclub. Guys and Dolls opened on Broadway on November 24, 1950. Producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin assembled an exceptional team to bring Runyon's hard-shelled, but basically softhearted characters to the stage. The team, which included composer/lyricist Frank Loesser, co-book writer Abe Burrows, director George S. Kaufman, and choreographer Michael Kidd, created an instant hit, praised by reviewers as one of the most well constructed book musicals in Broadway history. Guys and Dolls has had several successful Broadway revivals and tours, and is one of the most produced shows worldwide. The Broadway Junior version has the approval of the author's estate and was first produced in 1998. Adelaide Adelaide needn't be a great singer, but must have a strong character voice and a good sense of pitch. She needs to be able to do a New York accent and have good comic timing. Sky Masterson Sky Masterson is the quintessential, smooth as velvet Broadway gambler. He needn't be a great singer, but MUST be able to own the stage in "Luck Be a Lady." Sarah Brown Sarah Brown is the girl next door with a more adventurous side that's waiting to get out. She must be an excellent singer and a good actor. Arvide Abernathy Arvide Abernathy is Sarah's grandfather. May also be cast as a girl, changing to Sarah's grandmother. Benny Southstreet Benny Southstreet is a gambler. Rusty Charlie Rusty Charlie is a gambler. Harry the Horse Harry the Horse is a gambler. Lt. Brannigan Lt. Brannigan is a New York City cop. General Cartwright General Cartwright is head of the Save-a-Soul mission. Big Jule Big Jule is a very tough, gun-toting gangster from Chicago. Mimi Mimi is a doll. Angie the Ox Angie the Ox is a gambler. Guys Guys - The rest of your male ensemble (except for the mission band) can be cast as "guys." They are the crapshooters, gamblers, workers, New York City folks of all types. Dolls Dolls - The Dolls are your Hot Box girls and other ensemble females. You will want to designate your Hot Box girls as your preferred singers and dancers. Frequently, you will have many more girls than boys audition, so you may want to cast some of your girls as "guys." Mission Band Mission Band includes Agatha and Calvin. You can fill out the ensemble of your production by adding as many members of the Mission Band as your stage can accommodate.
