The world premiere of Jan Müller-Wieland's “Rondo” for viola and violoncello was given at a night concert on 8 February 2014 during the course of the Hindemith Festival of the University of the Arts in Berlin. The performers were the violist Hartmut Rohde and the cellist Jens-Peter Maintz. Hartmut Rohde asked four composer friends, amongst them Jan Müller-Wieland, to contribute a brief duo including the viola inspired by Hindemith's Duet for viola and violoncello composed in 1934. Müller-Wieland decided on the original instrumentation of the Hindemith Duet and has dedicated his Rondo to the soloists of the world premiere.
