David Karp | Hal Leonard David Karp David Karp, well-known pianist, composer and pedagogue, has distinguished himself as one of today's leading composers of piano teaching materials. He has received numerous commissions and awards and is in frequent demand as a judge and clinician for conventions and contests. Dr. Karp holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and the University of Colorado. He has been a member of the Southern Methodist University piano faculty since 1975, teaching courses in piano performance, jazz improvisation, and class piano techniques for the college teacher. David Schwoebel | Hal Leonard David Schwoebel David Schwoebel is Minister of Music / Composer in Residence at Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond Virginia. He is a graduate of McKendree College in Lebanon, IL and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Voice and Organ Performance, and a Master of Church Music with an emphasis in Composition. Prior to beginning his ministry at Derbyshire in January 1997, he had served churches in his hometown of Belleville, IL, Montgomery AL, and Atlanta, GA. As an ordained minister, David administrates and oversees a comprehensive music ministry of six choral organizations, four handbell choirs, and a 32-piece orchestra. His energetic, hands-on approach to ministry finds him working each week with people of all ages, encouraging and equipping them to discover and develop their varied musical talents and skills. The MICHELLE hymn tune included in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal is named for David’s wife, Michelle. David Angerman | Hal Leonard David Angerman David Angerman is the Director of Choral Arts at Regents School of Austin. Additionally, he has been the Director of Music and organist at Bethany Lutheran Church, Austin, Texas, since 1980. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree and Master of Church Music Degree from Baylor University and a Master of Music Degree in Organ Performance from the University of Texas in Austin. As a composer, his published works include choral and handbell music as well as organ and piano solos. He has written the music for several youth and children's musicals, and co-authored, along with Joseph Martin and Mark Hayes, KEYS FOR THE KINGDOM, a piano method for Christian students, published by Shawnee Press. David Lantz III | Hal Leonard David Lantz III David Lantz III is originally from Mountain Lake, New Jersey. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. His major instrument was the trombone. He has taught music in all grade levels from K-college, including high school band, chorus, and music theory, junior high school general and choral, and elementary general and choral. Currently, he teaches at East Stroudsburg High School South, where he directs two concert choirs, jazz/show choir, and a select chorale. In addition to choral activities, Dave has developed three levels of music theory, which have contributed a great deal to the success of the choral program. Also, David is the choral director at Stroudsburg United Methodist Church and director of Pocono Summer Chorus, a community chorus in the Pocono Mountains. David is a freelance studio bass player and vocalist, having also played extensively in many resorts and clubs in the tri-state area, both with his own band and with other musicians. While not teaching or playing, he fills his spare time with music publishing activities, including editing, engraving, arranging and composing choral music and occasionally conducting choral reading sessions. He has nearly 300 choral octavos in print with Shawnee Press as well as many other publishers throughout the United States. David is a member of PMEA and ACDA. As a member of ASCAP, he has won many writers awards. David resides in Sciota, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Marti Lunn Lantz (also a published composer and lyricist) and six children. Terry York | Hal Leonard Terry York Terry W. York is Professor of Christian Ministry and Church Music at Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary. He joined the faculty in 1998 after serving three years as the Associate Pastor of Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, TX. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from California Baptist University and his Master of Church Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been Minister of Music in churches in California and Arizona. From 1984-1995 he served at the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources) in Nashville, TN. His duties there included being the Project Coordinator for The Baptist Hymnal, 1991. In all, Dr. York has published more than 40 hymns including the well-known Worthy of Worship. His hymn Give Us Courage was commissioned by the Truett Seminary administration and approved by the Truett Seminary faculty as the official Seminary Hymn in 2006. In addition to his hymns, Dr. York has published more than 60 choral anthem texts set by composers such as Bob Burroughs, David Danner, Tom Fettke, Benjamin Harlan, Mary McDonald, Earlene Rentz, David Schwoebel, Joseph Martin, and Vicki Hancock Wright. The Worship Matrix, co-authored with David Bolin (Celebrating Grace, Inc., 2010), is the fourth of Dr. York's books to have been translated into Chinese. In June 2008 it was his privilege to be one of two featured plenary speakers at The World Association of Chinese Church Musicians' biannual conference which met in Kuching, Malaysia. In June 2009, the Baptist Church Music Conference, meeting in Nashville, TN, gave Dr. York the W. Hines Sims Award, its most prestigious recognition. Susan Boersma | Hal Leonard Susan Boersma Susan Bentall Boersma was born and educated in Michigan and began her study of music with her parents, both of whom were performing artists. Her piano/organ/voice studies continued while attending Hope College. She has served as accompanist for college choirs and touring groups as well as for various solo artists and community choirs. She has led workshops on music and worship and has held positions as pianist, choral director and director of music ministries at churches in Michigan, Wisconsin, Vermont and Ohio. Susan is a published lyricist and writes with Craig Courtney, David Lantz III, Lloyd Larson and Mark Hayes on both sacred and school repertoire. Gene Grier | Hal Leonard Gene Grier Gene Grier (August 5, 1942 - May 3, 2009) wrote music and lyrics on a regular basis for Shawnee Press in collaboration with Greg Gilpin, Ruth Elaine Schram, Patrick Liebergen, David Lantz III, Lowell Everson and several other Shawnee Press composers. Gene is a former public school teacher and university professor and was actively involved in church music as a soloist and director all of his life. He was a soloist with The Norman Luboff Choir, Executive Vice President, General Manager of J.W. Pepper in Detroit, and was an Executive Editor for The Lorenz Corporation. He was also the Director of The Vocal Arts Academy, which was in residence at Oakland University, Rochester, MI for 25 years. Shirley Brendlinger | Hal Leonard Shirley Brendlinger Shirley Brendlinger is a performer, adjucator, published composer and recording artist. She is a nationally certified teacher of piano, theory and composition. She holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Kentucky, specializing in piano performance. For thirty-five years she has taught music, including being an adjunct professor at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. Her students have won numerous awards at regional and national levels. She has performed in England, Scotland, Germany and The Bahamas as well as in the United States. In addition to her performing and teaching, Ms. Brendlinger is the Youth Education Specialist at her church, where she has created a mentorship program training youth to develop musical and other talents to be presented in worship settings. Shirley lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, Irv. They enjoy their two adult children, Carol Joy and David. Paul Langford | Hal Leonard Paul Langford A Chicago based singer, arranger, keyboardist, producer and conductor, Paul Langford has a career that spans over 25 years. His work includes arranging for and performing with groups such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicagoland Pops, the Grand Rapids, Pensacola, Anderson (IN) and LaCrosse Symphony Orchestras and for Walt Disney World.¶As a singer and pianist, Paul has performed or recorded with Grammy Award winners Celine Dion, David Foster, Kenny Rogers, Yolanda Adams, Abraham Laboriel and Heather Headley, has shared the stage with Michael Buble and Josh Groban, and has performed for President Bill Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama.¶His voice has been heard on radio and TV commericials for such companies as Ronald McDonald House, Oldsmobile, L.L. Bean, Old El Paso, Nintendo, Frigidaire, and Nickelodeon. He has also led and arranged for choirs, rhythm sections, big bands, orchestra and a cappella groups all across America and abroad and is a published choral arranger and composer.¶In the Chicago area, Paul can be heard singing and playing keyboards with the Tom VanKanegan and the Z Orchestras. Marti Lunn Lantz | Hal Leonard Marti Lunn Lantz Marti Lunn Lantz is a native of Akron, Ohio, and attended the University of Akron as a piano performance major, also acting as vocalist with the University jazz band and later singing with Fred Waring. Marti has performed as a band singer and keyboardist in the Pocono Mountains resorts for many years, as well as working as a studio session singer. Winning awards each year beginning at the age of 9 as a junior composer led to the publication of her first choral work by Shawnee Press when she was a senior in high school. Teaming with Lois Brownsey, Marti has choral works and songbooks published with Shawnee Press, Alfred, Warner Bros., and Hal Leonard, and has received ASCAP awards for many years. Collaborating with her husband, composer and teacher David Lantz III on many choral works, she is co-owner of Lantz Choral Publications, a publisher of sacred choral works. Marti is a member of PFMC and teaches piano and voice in her music studio as well as holding the position of organist at Stroudsburg United Methodist Church. J. Paul Williams | Hal Leonard J. Paul Williams J. Paul Williams (Dec. 29, 1937 - Feb. 17, 2010) received his Bachelor of Music degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and Master of Music degree with emphasis in theory and composition from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. For 35 years he served as Minister of Music in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas - from 1975 until 1992 at Calvary Baptist Church in Little Rock. In 1992, he became a full-time lyricist and clinician. Inspired by his robust Christian faith, Paul became one of the nation’s most renowned lyricists of choral music, relying on a concise writing style to successfully convey messages of Scripture through his words. Mr. Williams led reading clinics, choral workshops, and adult, youth, and children's conferences nationwide, from California to Washington, D.C., and Canada. He is credited with 900 titles, which are carried by 25 publishers, in both the school and church markets. Since 1992, he has been a lyricist only, collaborating with over 50 composers, including Joseph Martin, Mark Hayes, James M. ""Jimbo"" Stevens, Patti Drennan, Benjamin Harlan, Lloyd Larson, David Lantz, and others. His works have been sung by church, school, and community choirs throughout the world. Publications by J. Joseph M. Martin | Hal Leonard Joseph M. Martin Joseph Martin (b. 1959 ), a native of North Carolina, earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Subsequently he earned a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Texas, Austin. Joseph taught for five years in the Piano Pedagogy Department of the University of Texas. His piano teachers include Jimmy Woodle, David Gibson, Amanda Vick Lethco, Martha Hilley and Danielle Martin. While at Furman University, he was accompanist for choral director and composer Milburn Price and, inspired by his teaching, Martin began to compose. He is a member of the staff of Shawnee Press as Director of Sacred Publications, with responsibilities for overseeing the editorial and creative direction of the company’s sacred publications and also coordinating the recording and production aspects of future sacred publishing efforts. Joseph has performed solo piano recitals and has been the featured artist with symphony orchestras in the United States and Mexico. As winner of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition, he performed with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra. His solo recital in Ex-convento del Carmen was broadcast nationally throughout the country. Though he continues to perform in concert, he now devotes his efforts to playing in churches and for conferences of church musicians His first solo piano recording, American Tapestry, was nominated for a Dove Award. This album, along with his other recordings (Songs of the Journey, Celtic Tapestry, and A Christmas Tapestry) has been enormously popular in the sacred and secular markets. He has recorded for Yamaha's Disklavier series and has composed hundreds of commissioned works. Recognized throughout the United States for his many choral compositions, over 1200 compositions are currently in print and the list continues to grow. His composition ""Pieta"" was recently honored with an award from the John Ness Beck Foundation. In 2008 he was inducted as a National Patron of the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity. Along with Mark Hayes and David Angerman, Joseph has co-authored a fully graded, progressive piano method for the Christian student called Keys for the Kingdom. His major works include nearly 40 choral cantatas and extended works and Song of Wisdom, a choral tone poem based on the best-selling children's book, Old Turtle. His music can be heard in such diverse locations as Carnegie Hall in New York City; the Lawrence Welk Theatre in Branson, Missouri; and in hundreds of worship services in churches across the United States and Canada. Glenda Austin | Hal Leonard Glenda Austin Glenda Austin is a recognized composer, arranger, pianist and teacher who writes piano music popular at all levels. Glenda graduated from the University of Missouri (Columbia) with a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in piano performance. As an elementary and high school music teacher, Glenda holds memberships in the Music Teachers National Association, Missouri Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Association, Missouri Music Teachers Association and the Joplin Piano Teachers Association. Glenda is a frequent adjudicator and clinician, having presented workshops for teachers and students throughout the United States as well as Canada and Japan. In addition, she serves as an adjunct faculty member at Missouri Southern State University, accompanying jazz and choral groups as well as individual vocal students. Published by Willis Music Company, many of her compositions appear on state repertoire lists. “Jazz Suite No. 2” and “Sea Nocturne” are perennial favorites on the National Federation list. She has also been commissioned by Clavier magazine and continues to be regularly commissioned by teachers’ organizations across the United States. Because of her association and friendship with William Gillock, renowned composer, she was chosen by Willis to simplify the ever popular New Orleans Jazz Styles as well as arrange it for four-hand duets. Roy Belfield | Hal Leonard Roy Belfield Roy L. Belfield, Jr., a native of Petersburg, Virginia, began his undergraduate studies in Music at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Masters’ degrees in Choral Music Education and Organ Performance from Florida State University in Tallahassee, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Organ Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Additional studies in vocal pedagogy have been at the University of Alabama. He has studied choral conducting with David Morrow, Rodney Eichenberger, and Scott Anderson. His organ teachers have included Carl G. Harris, Jr. Clarence E. Whiteman, Herman D. Taylor, Joyce F. Johnson, Michael L. Corzine, and John Obetz. As an educator, Dr. Belfield has taught students from preschool to college. As a church musician, he has served six denominations throughout the country. He currently serves as Church Organist at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. As composer and arranger, Dr. Belfield has written works for chorus, voice and piano, and organ. His choral and organ works are published by Mark Foster, a division of Shawnee Press, MorningStar Music, GIA Publications, and Wayne Leupold Editions. Dr. Belfield is currently Associate Professor of Music and University Organist at Winston-Salem State University. He also serves as Assistant Director of the Spiritual Renaissance Singers of Greensboro. Belfield served on the faculty at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama before coming to Winston-Salem State University. Dr. Belfield frequently serves as a choral adjudicator, guest conductor, concert organist, and accompanist across the country. Kathryn Salfelder | Hal Leonard Kathryn Salfelder Kathryn Salfelder began studying music and composition at the age of six at the Bergen Yamaha Music School in New Jersey. She earned her DMA in composition at the New England Conservatory, her M.M. in composition from the Yale School of Music and a B.M. in composition with academic honors from New England Conservatory. Her primary teachers include Michael Gandolfi, Aaron Jay Kernis, and David Lang. She is the recipient of NEC’s 2009 Donald Martino Award for Excellence in Composition, 2009 George Chadwick Medal, and 2012 Tourjee Alumni Scholarship, as well as the ASCAP/CBDNA Frederick Fennell Prize, ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, Ithaca College Walter Beeler Memorial Composition Prize, and the United States Air Force Gabriel Award. Dr. Salfelder’s music has been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, Albany (NY) Symphony, Yale Philharmonia, New England Philharmonic, Boston Musica Viva, United States Air Force Band – Washington D. C., and the Dallas Wind Symphony, and has been featured in over 300 concerts at the nation’s leading universities and conservatories. Joan Tower | Hal Leonard Joan Tower Joan Tower is widely regarded as one of the most important American composers living today. During a career spanning more than fifty years, she has made lasting contributions to musical life in the United States as composer, performer, conductor, and educator. Her works have been commissioned by major ensembles, soloists, and orchestras, including the Emerson, Tokyo, and Muir quartets; soloists Evelyn Glennie, Carol Wincenc, David Shifrin, Paul Neubauer, and John Browning; and the orchestras of Chicago, New York, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Nashville, Albany, and Washington D.C. among others. In 2019 the League of American Orchestras awarded her its highest honor, the Gold Baton, at the League's 74th national conference. Tower is the first composer chosen for a Ford Made in America consortium commission of sixty-five orchestras. Leonard Slatkin and the Nashville Symphony recorded Made in America in 2008 (along with Tambor and Concerto for Orchestra). The album collected three Grammy awards: Best Contemporary Classical Composition, Best Classical Album, and Best Orchestral Performance. Nashville’s latest all-Tower recording includes Stroke, which received a 2016 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. In 1990 she became the first woman to win the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Silver Ladders, a piece she wrote for the St. Louis Symphony where she was Composer-in-Residence from 1985-88. Other residencies with orchestras include a 10-year residency with the Orchestra of St. Luke's (1997-2007) and the Pittsburgh Symphony (2010-11). She was the Albany Symphony’s Mentor Composer partner in the 2013-14 season. Tower was cofounder and pianist for the Naumburg Award-winning Da Capo Chamber Players from 1970-85. She has received honorary doctorates from Smith College, the New England Conservatory, and Illinois State University. Matt Conaway | Hal Leonard Matt Conaway Matt Conaway Matt Conaway (b. 1979) was appointed to the Purdue University faculty in August 2012 as an Assistant Professor of Bands. He serves as an associate director of the famed "All-American" Marching Band and basketball pep bands, and directs the University Concert Band and Varsity Band. He is also the faculty supervisor for the band's various auxiliary units, serves as the department's technical coordinator, and coordinates the annual Band Day event. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Conaway served for ten years as the Director of Bands for the West Lafayette Community School Corporation, during which time the program received many state and national accolades for msuical excellence. He brought the Marching "red Devil" Band, basketball pep band, jazz band, and symphony orchestra back to he music department, and raised band program enrollment by over 200 sutdents in grades 5-12. During his tenure, West Lafayette became regarded as one of the great small-school music programs in Indian, with two state concert finals appearances and dozens of superior festival ratings. The NAMM Foundation recognized the West Lafayette Community School Corporation as one of the "Best Communities for Music Education in America" in 2006, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Mr Conaway is a noted composer for concert band, with over 30 works currently in print. His compositions range from very beginning through very advanced, based on his experience working with all levels of performers in grades 5-12. He has received commissions from many schools and honor bands in the last five years. He is also an accomplished, arranger, and has written for athletic bands at Indiana University, Purdue University, and many high schools and colleges throughout the country. His arrangements have been heard internationally at multiple bowl games, basketball tournaments, and major sporting events since 1999. After graduating from Woodhaven (MI) High School in 1997, Mr. Conaway attended Indiana University – Bloomington, where he studied arranging with David Woodley. He received his Bachelor of Music Education with Distinction in 2001, and earned a Masters of Music degree from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University in 2010. He is a member of NAFME, CBDNA, NBA, ASTA, Indiana Music Educators Association, Indiana Bandmasters Association, and ASCAP. He is an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi, and was recently inducted into the Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Mu. Samuel R. Hazo | Hal Leonard Samuel R. Hazo Samuel R. Hazo (b. 1966) resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his wife and children. In 2003, Mr. Hazo became the first composer in history to be awarded the winner of both composition contests sponsored by the National Band Association. He has composed for the professional, university and public school levels in addition to writing original scores for television, radio and the stage. His original symphonic compositions include performances with actors Brooke Shields, James Earl Jones, David Conrad and Richard Kiley. Most recently, Mr. Hazo was asked by the Newtown School District to compose the memorial for the children and women who were lost in the tragedy at their Sandy Hook Elementary School. The result was a major work for Choir, Orchestra and Wind Band combined titled "Glorificare." It was premiered in May of 2013 by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and VOCE Singers performing side-by-side with the Newtown High School musicians. Mr. Hazo also composed "Bridges," which he was requested to write by Virginia Tech University following their tragic shootings. In 2012, two of Mr. Hazo's compositions were performed at the London Summer Olympic Games. On the Internet, Mr. Hazo's music has compiled over three million hits on YouTube. His compositions have been performed and recorded world-wide, including performances by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra (national tour), the Birmingham Symphonic Winds (UK) and the Klavier Wind Project’s recordings with Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Additionally, numerous titles of Mr. Hazo's works are included in the series "Teaching Music Through Performance in Band." He has served as composer-in-residence at Craig Kirchhoff’s University of Minnesota Conducting Symposium and has also lectured on music and music education at universities and high schools internationally. In 2004, Mr. Hazo's compositions were listed in a published national survey of the "Top Twenty Compositions of All Time" for wind band. He is a member of ASCAP and recipient of multiple ASCAPlus Awards. Samuel R. Hazo has been a music teacher at every educational grade level from kindergarten through college, including tenure as a high school and university director. He has been invited to guest conduct over 60 university ensembles and half of All-State bands in America. Mr. Hazo was twice named “Teacher of Distinction” by the southwestern Pennsylvania Teachers’ Excellence Foundation. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Duquesne University where he served on the Board of Governors and was awarded as Duquesne’s Outstanding Graduate in Music Education. Paul Wright | Hal Leonard Paul Wright Paul Leddington Wright was organ scholar at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge where he studied with Peter Le Huray, David Willcocks and Alan Ridout. On leaving Cambridge, he freelanced for four years working mainly in the professional theatre as a musical director. In 1982 he was appointed musical director for the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs, during which time he consolidated the work of the MAYC Singers and Orchestra, which he founded in the 70's. In 1984 he was appointed Organist and Director of Music at Coventry Cathedral, a position he held until 1995. During this period, he recorded and broadcasted frequently with the Cathedral Choir, and toured all over the world, including five trips to the US, Jamaica, and a trip to Italy, where the choir sang for the Pope. He directed the music for many important occasions at the Cathedral, including the Queen's visit to Coventry for the distribution of the Royal Maundy in 1995. Since 1984, he has been conductor of the Cathedral's choral society, the Saint Michael's Singers, with whom he has made over 20 recordings. Many of those recordings have been for the Kingsway Hymnmakers Series. A new series of the choir's recordings has been released in the USA under the Cathedral Classics - Coventry Music label. He has conducted a vast repertoire of choral literature with choirs and orchestras both in the UK and abroad. In 1995, he became parttime at Coventry in order to make space for an increasing work schedule at the BBC. He is the principal conductor for the weekly BBC TV program, Songs of Praise, and since 1986 has conducted over 150 programs all over the world. He is also a prolific arranger for the series. Major programs he has conducted have come from cathedrals, concert halls, and four programs from the Royal Albert Hall, London. In 2000, he conducted 65,000 people at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium. He is also involved with BBC Radio and conducts frequently for the Radio 4 Daily Service and also the Radio 4 Sunday Morning Worship. He also records for Radio 2's Sunday Half-Hour. Since 1991 he has been Artistic Director of the annual International Church Music Festival, which has alternated between Coventry Cathedral, Chester Cathedral and Bern, Switzerland. He was guest conductor for Belmont University's 2007 Christmas at Belmont which was recorded in Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Centre, and broadcast nationwide on PBS Christmas 2007 and 2008.
